Laser Hair Removal

Both men and women have problems with unwanted hair.  Laser hair removal is safe, fast, and effective for those who are interested in permanent removal of unwanted hair. Laser hair removal is long-lasting, non-invasive, and usually just takes a few minutes on small areas such as the face or underarms. Those who have fair skin and dark hair may be the best candidates for this laser procedure; the basic rule is that the hair should be darker than the skin in order to produce the best results.

  •  Some irritation and/or redness may occur afterwards, but in general, laser hair removal is a fairly direct, uncomplicated, and common process.

  •   Only about 1/3 of your hair grows at any one time and the hair follicle is killed during the growing stage, therefore it may take several laser treatments for effective permanent hair removal. More than one treatment-spaced approximately a month apart-is needed to ensure that the laser treats all body hair in its growth cycle, usually 4-6 treatments. Fine light colored hair will take more treatments.

  • The length of time for an individual laser treatment varies from approx 10-30 minutes on small areas like the face, underarms, or bikini area to approx 45-60 minutes on larger areas like the chest, back, or legs. Generally, the larger the body surface area, the more time the laser hair removal treatment will take.

  • The laser hair removal treatment should not be extremely painful. Some describe as "feels like a rubber band pop" Tell your laser technician immediately if you feel more than a slight stinging sensation.

After Laser Hair Removal Treatment

You should refrain from activities that will heat your core, such as exercise, sauna, gardening, or tanning, for at least 4 hours after any laser treatment. Although patients can return to most normal activities immediately after laser hair removal treatment, some swelling and redness may occur. These byproducts of laser hair removal treatment typically go away within 24 hours. Ice, anti-inflammatory creams, or aloe gels or lotions may also be applied to the treated area to minimize discomfort and the risk of complications. Many patients have compared the ensuing discomfort to a mild sunburn.
